Four Extremely Influential Books

Who has time to read? Well, you do. It’s easy to make excuses when you don’t want to do something, but these four books will have you turning the pages. Also, two of them are movies in case I still can’t convince you to read.

Atomic Habits by James Clear

Ok, let’s get started. Atomic Habits is a book that talks about the formation of habits, why it’s difficult to create healthy habits, and how to keep these habits. I’m a victim of failed New Year’s resolutions. I know, I know I should be motivating you, not relating. This book truly changed my outlook on how to form my habits.

Honestly, it’s easy to form a bad habit (checking your phone when you wake up, watching TV to fall asleep, etc.). I do these things too. Read this book and you will learn how to get rid of these bad habits and begin new healthier habits.

Hillbilly Elegy by J.D Vance

I’m sure many of you know who J.D Vance is (current VP as of 2025). I will say this book is not political but extremely eye-opening. J.D is a great storyteller, and this book is worth purchasing.

It tells the story of J.D growing up in Appalachia Country which many people consider to be “hillbilly nation”. He talks about the culture of this area and how the continuous reinforcement of bad habits caused “his people” to continue to fail. This is a powerful book for seeing a firsthand perspective of a culture that may be different than yours.

My final highlight is that it is a movie. The movie isn’t great, though; you should read the book to understand the purpose fully.

The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater

I read this book on a whim. A recommendation from a friend with a description that didn’t seem interesting. However, this book truly broke my heart.

The 57 Bus is a true story based in Oakland, CA. It tells the story of two teenagers who ride the city bus after school and how one split-second decision changed their paths forever. It discusses peer pressure and how a seemingly normal day can change your path. It talks about forgiveness as well and the messiness of it.

I know this is a broad description, but it’s such a good book I think it’s better to have limited information before reading it.

The Shack by William P. Young

This is a religious book that touches on the topic of forgiveness and God’s intentions and purpose in your life. This book is what brought me to God. I did not grow up religious, but after reading “The Shack” my perspective changed.

Funny enough, two of my favorite books are about forgiveness. This is a subject I find hard to implement in my life. These two books helped me begin my journey towards forgiveness and become a kinder human being. Whether you are religious or not, this book is a must read.

The movie is also pretty good if you aren’t a big reader.

Final notes

I just wanted to make a note that many libraries carry these books if you don’t want to purchase them. If you trust me enough to purchase the books, then a great website to explore is Thrift Books. I will not receive any benefits if you visit their website, I just think it’s a good resource.
