5 ways to travel stress-free this summer

Why does traveling have to be so damn stressful? Lack of planning, group travel, early mornings, etc. There are countless possible reasons. Let’s dive into five solutions for your biggest stressors when traveling.

Planning

Let’s be honest, a vacation is exciting. Sometimes we are so focused on the destination that we forget the planning part. I have an important note for the impromptu travelers.

IF YOU WANT A PEACEFUL TRIP, YOU MUST PLAN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE.

The Internet is a powerful thing. There is so much available at our fingertips. This includes travel regulations, popular attractions at your travel destination, pre-check-in, and more. If this is available at our fingertips, why don’t we do it?

Seriously, look into the rental cars, flight check-in, specific travel requirements, hotel/rental house check-in, etc. These things are especially important if Wi-Fi isn’t available on the flight. Wouldn’t you rather fly knowing everything is in place rather than worrying when you land?

packing

Girls, I get it, there are countless things to think about. What if the weather drastically changes? What if your bag is stolen? What if the washing machine stains all your clothes?

For us overthinkers, these are real things to think about. As a fellow overthinker, I will tell you that the dress you haven’t worn in a decade isn’t going to be worn now. Those shoes that are cute but uncomfortable are going to be replaced with your practical sandals/flip flops.

Let’s pack light and effectively. This means adequate pairs of undergarments and socks. It’s ok to rewear clothing. It won’t ruin your Instagram feed, I promise. Also, the more room you leave, means more room for souvenirs!

tickets & Ids

Man, oh man! I cannot tell you how many times I misread my ticket date or time. I’m a worrier, and oftentimes I have dates and times memorized, but traveling puts me on edge.

If you worry like me, make sure you are triple-checking your tickets and your IDs. The Real ID Act just passed in the U.S. and if you wish to travel domestically, you must have a “real ID” or a passport. You don’t want to show up to the airport, just to discover you are unable to get past security.

Check in online and have your updated information (ID, passport, etc.). Verifying these things will save a lot of stress and headaches on travel day.

charge your devices

My phone is old, which means it dies fast. There is no worse feeling than downloading all your entertainment on a device that dies mid-flight.

Outlets are very standard on planes now, especially the larger ones, but some budget airlines still do not offer outlets unless you are in an upgraded class. Therefore, it is important that you either upgrade (additional charge), bring a portable charger (no outlet needed), or charge your devices prior to boarding.

Now, which of the three options seems the most reasonable? Remember, guys, this goes back to planning before flying. What could make a day worse than a dead phone (our livelihood) and uncertain travel plans post-arrival?

practice mindfulness

You’ve made it to the end! This is by far the most important part. Traveling is stressful. It truly is a great patience exercise.

Security is going to be long; patience is going to be low. You’ll probably be hot, tired, and hungry. The best way to combat these things is practicing PATIENCE.

By whining and complaining, the line isn’t going to move faster. Take those deep breaths and remember, there is nothing you can do to increase the speed of the person in front of you or the TSA.
